/// amazing new DIY Concert Series in Philadephia ///
When I first moved to Philadelphia about a decade ago, there was a venue called the Tritone on 16th and Bainbridge. It was an amazing place … imagine the dumpiest dive bar, with the cheapest drinks, and the most irreverent music possible with ZERO genre restrictions. You could see a modern jazz big band, death metal duo, and Balkan dance band … ALL IN THE SAME SHOW !
It was a wild time, a great hang, and a testament to the eclecticism of the Philly music scene at the time.
However, the Tritone closed it’s doors (not sure when that happened exactly), and the sense of DIY shows faded a bit.
Now, a gifted young guitarist named Eric McGarry has taken it upon himself to start a new concert series that reminds me of the energy I felt at the Tritone all those years ago.
It’s called ‘Free Range’ and occurs every last Thursday of the month at Urban Arts Movement, a music and dance studio located at 21st and Chestnut.
They present a wide variety of music and artists, across genres and mediums … PS the next one is on July 27th !!!
A couple months back, I performed at the inaugural concert with my band.
The show was recorded and I’d love to share it with you right now.
It was an amazing night, full of friends, pizza, and sounds … it really took me back and made me grateful that the younger generation is making things happen in the world !
